What is a modernity (addict)??? I came to this ABOUT looking for the answer, but it didn’t really tell me squat about modernity.
How and when did you give your life to Christ?
A modernity addict is someone who loves what the world has to offer vs. what God through Jesus Christ has to offer and tries to find happiness and contentment in the world. There are many ways of looking at modernity, but for me, it has always represented secularism and indifference toward God. A modernity addict makes his or her own path, usually ending in lots of pain.
I surrendered my will to Christ several years ago at 27 after years of depression. Up until this point I was completely wrapped up in myself and the world. I was raised in the church and baptized at 12, but it wasn’t real. Church was a social scene for me in high school and not much more, and even worse, church was nonexistent for me in college. Through God’s grace I have come out the other side with the proper perspective and the proper priorities.
Incidently, it was hearing the Switchfoot song “Meant To Live” on a secular radio station and the invite from a friend to check out Fellowship Church that started it all. This is why I support Switchfoot so much along with other Christian rock groups like Relient K, Flyleaf, The Wedding, Hawk Nelson, TobyMac (he is a mixture of rock and hip-hop), This Beautiful Republic, A Dream Too Late, Sanctus Real, Superchick, Family Force 5, Kutless, Skillet, etc. God is using these guys to reach people as my own life can attest.
He is also using skateboarding in a HUGE way, which is why, even though I have not skateboarded in years, I am a big supporter of these ministries. If something like Livin’ It had been around when I was in middle school or high school, I might not have taken such a long detour. In fact, I support anything/anyone exposing Christ to the youth of the world, because I do not feel like my generation had that. I can go all day on this so I will end it there.
Ah, now I know what modernity is, thanks.
“Incidently, it was hearing the Switchfoot song “Meant To Live” on a secular radio station and the invite from a friend to check out Fellowship Church that started it all. This is why I support Switchfoot so much along with other Christian rock groups…”
That makes sense.
“He is also using skateboarding in a HUGE way…”
Our kids are skaters and they come from homes where mom and dad don’t really care about them, or at least he sure doesn’t seem like they do. Each of them has a heartbreaking story. We met them by asking them if we could video record them skating and then we started cooking them dinner. Now we have about 30 kids that come on Wednesday nights. We eat, play loud music, play games and give them a small portion of scripture to think about. We accept them as they are. Last winter we got to take a few kids to our winter reteat in Leaky, Texas. Some of the camp counselors were giving them the hairy eyeball as they have piercings and dark clothing. They weren’t “polished” like their “squeaky clean” youth group who may possibly be there for social reasons too. Our youth group needs a little compassion and for adults to say, “Atta boy,” since their parents aren’t giving it to them. Here’s a video of our last Winter Retreat. Our group in the vid are the skaters. Levi is the smaller kid on his ripstick.

Cool video. It looked like the skaters did not have much room to skate.
There is a church up here in North Texas that just bought an entire skate park worth of ramps and rails for $10. The city that operated it just wanted to cut their losses and get rid of it so they would not have to pay to fix it up. Now this church is going to have a permanent skate park for ministry and public use. Ten dollars is a God thing in my book. I will probably write some kind of post about it soon. Anyway, glad you now know what a modernity addict is.
Hey peak9,
I am here from Selena’s blog but you prob know that already. I love your ABOUT page, your self-portrait in words, and your comments here. I’m adding you to my RSS subscriptions.
Welcome Ric and thanks for the subscription.
Mac user and a longhorn? I will have to visit again. You rock.
Hey there peak9,
where are you?
Did I ever tell you that my Mother’s Uncle was Darell Royal. So, I have been a Longhorn fan all of my life. I also spent a whole teenage summer in Dallas and Waxahachie.
God Bless, wherever you are.
