Have you heard about this? I am a bit late to the show, but I thought I would post on it anyway. Aliza Shvarts, a Yale art student, used “a needleless syringe to insert semen into herself” to induce pregnancy and “took abortifacient herbs to induce” miscarriages all in the name of art. Yale University spokeswoman Helaine Klasky said this:

She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art. Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns.

Ted Miller from the pro-choice group NARAL even blasted the artist:

This ‘project’ is offensive and insensitive to the women who have suffered the heartbreak of miscarriage.

Wanda Franz from The National Right to Life Committee said this:

It’s clearly depraved. I think the poor woman has got some major mental problems.

But Kate McDermott, a fellow student at Yale, supports her art:

If you appreciate the idea that art is intrinsically related to politics, then it is perfectly acceptable. But it does set a standard for achieving shock value.

What do you think? Is there a limit to what artists can do, or is an anything goes attitude acceptable? It is now acceptable to have abortions for profit and abortions to reduce humanity’s carbon footprint. What is next?

Read more about it here and here.

A couple days ago I posted on my ideal home, a DWR edition Airstream. Not a whole lot will fit into such a home given its 120 square feet of space. This got me thinking about my library of books and how only a fraction of them would fit into such a space, so I came up with a list of a dozen books I would have to keep. A couple will be obvious to my regular visitors, but others my be surprising.

  1. The Bible
  2. C.S. Lewis for the Third Millennium by Peter Kreeft
  3. East of Eden by John Steinbeck
  4. The Unusual Suspect by Stephen Baldwin
  5. The Confessions by St. Augustine
  6. The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis
  7. From Modernism to Postmodernism: An Anthology edited by Lawrence Cahoone
  8. The Gospel According To Jesus by John MacArthur, Jr.
  9. Towards A New Architecture by Le Corbusier
  10. Art In Theory 1900-1990: An Anthology of Changing Ideas edited by Charles Harrison and Paul Wood
  11. Henry David Thoreau: Walden And Other Writings introduced by Nat Hentoff
  12. S,M,L,XL by Rem Koolhaas, Bruce Mau, and Hans Werlemann

If you could only keep a dozen books, what would they be?

Here is some t-shirt goodness courtesy of CafePress.com—Barack moving in for the kill. What is he whispering in Michelle’s ear? Here are some possibilities:

  • “Michelle, you can be proud of America now that I’m running for president.”
  • “America’s so stupid. All I have to do is say “change” and “hope” and they fall down on their knees in ecstasy. You like ecstasy, don’t you?”
  • “You’re married to a god.”
  • “You’ll be the sexiest First Lady ever. You’re so HOT.”
  • “You need this Hussein, don’t you?”
  • “You’re the mamma of this Obama.”
  • “Do you want to Barack ‘N’ Roll?”
  • “Yes we can, baby.”

We can only speculate what he is really saying. She seems to be enjoying whatever he is doing. Get the foreplay shirt here.
