This is the first of several quotes I am going to post from Christian Hosoi’s testimony at the Christian Skaters Conference 2007. Enjoy.

What does “change” look like? What does it sound like. Is it a Barack Obama speech? Not even close, but Christian Hosoi’s testimony at last year’s Chistian Skaters conference demonstrates what “change” really means and what it really looks and sounds like. I have repeatedly written here on this blog about how change begins in the heart and how it begins with God’s grace fulfilled through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Real change is not external, it is internal.

Hosoi’s transformation is powerful stuff. I have listed links to Hosoi’s testimony below and I encourage all Christians and non-Christians to check it out. When you think about the crazy life of Christian Hosoi before Christ—the girls, the drugs, the money, the fame, prison—and now hear him talk about his life and God’s plan for him, you cannot help but be amazed. God is using skateboarding and guys like Christian Hosoi to connect today’s youth with the message of Christ. Hosoi’s testimony will cause you to evaluate the effectiveness of your own life.

I am all about the church being culturally relevant and the skateboard ministries popping up all over America are just this. From Livin’ It, Skate Church, Christian Skaters, and the smaller local ministries, the message of Jesus is reaching young people in a meaningful way. If these type of ministries had been around when I was a teenager, I might have been spared many years of delusion.

I was recently contacted by a gentleman named Bill Mohler about a skate ministry in Cartersville, GA called Heaven Skates. This ministry is awesome. According to Bill’s short mission statement, for the last eleven years they have traveled to over 13 states and 70 locations ministering to skaters. This is a God thing.

The ministry started in 1997 after two boys were hit by a car while skateboarding. Today, the ministry is growing, giving advice to other churches about starting skate ministries, and traveling around in their mini bus preaching the gospel. Their 20,000 square foot skate park is also open to the public five days a week.

These guys have got a great video at GodTube promoting the ministry. So, check them out and see what these Believers are doing to spread Jesus’ message in a culturally relevant way.

In a previous post I listed some Christian skateboard ministries that are being relevant in spreading God’s Word. One of the ministries was brought to my attention by the family involved in it. They donate profits from the sale of custom skateboard decks to single parent ministries. I do not know the specifics about which organizations they donate to, their website does not say, but if you are interested you can contact them. Their skateboard deck company, BVDecks, stands for Bible Verse Decks and is associated with the site Board Pusher. You can also find them at their myspace page under the name iSk8WithGod.

They have four standard Bible verses: John 3:16, Genesis 1:1, Psalm 23:4, and Psalm 46:10. These are great verses, but the awesome part is that you can special order any verse you want. I am not sure if you can submit your own design with the verse, but you can contact them at the link above to get that information. They also have some buttons, stickers, and poster prints available. So, check them out, order a deck or submit an idea for a deck and in the process help out some single parent families. I pray that God will bless these guys and make this ministry thrive.
